Curator’s Note

This John Galliano jacket comes from the Spring/Summer 1999 collection titled Ballets Russes. The collection took its theme from the Russian dancer Nijinsky, with looks evocative of his ballet L'Après-midi d'un Faune. Vogue described the presentation as a tableau brought to life from a Lawrence Alma-Tadema painting, inspired by the classical world alongside references to Romeo Gigli and Mariano Fortuny, unified by Galliano's own 1930s-influenced bias cutting. This jacket is cut in burgundy satin jacquard with a Gothic-arched trellis pattern with foliate motifs at each intersection, fastened with glass buttons and finished with a draped hem. The jacket has a ruched waist and structured shawl collar.

John Galliano

John Galliano graduated from Central Saint Martins in 1984 with Les Incroyables, a collection drawn from the French Revolution bought in its entirety by Browns. He moved to Paris in the early 1990s, staging shows in borrowed hôtels particuliers that attracted Princess Diana, Madonna and LVMH, leading to appointments at Givenchy in 1995 and Christian Dior in 1996. Under his own label he ran concurrently with both houses, his work was shaped by romantic storytelling, bias-cut construction and historical characters drawn from across cultures and centuries. He was named British Designer of the Year four times.
