Curator's Note

From Gianni Versace Couture's AW 1994 collection, worn on the runway by Claudia Schiffer. The season paired an Empire-waist, 1960s silhouettes with black-plastic-coated silk and PVC, a combination Versace called "technoglamour," and Vogue's review of the show noted the sharp tailoring nodded to André Courrèges alongside the shine. This dress is a great example of this tension between structure and surface: a croc-embossed patent leather bodice, cut into breast cups and shoulder straps fastened with gilt Medusa-head buttons, forming cut-out sections at the front and back, while the skirt runs full-length in a black bouclé wool woven through with metallic thread.

Gianni Versace

Gianni Versace founded his Milan house in 1978, building it around bold colour, high-impact printed silk, classical antiquity and clothing designed to make an unambiguous statement. His house codes, which include the Medusa emblem, Greca borders, Baroque ornament, chainmail, safety-pin construction, remain among the most recognisable in Italian fashion. The work he produced between 1978 and 1997 is among the most studied and collected in the history of the house.
