Curator's Note

From Chanel's SS 1994 runway under Karl Lagerfeld, worn by Helena Christensen. The turquoise tweed with braided vinyl "Scoubidou" trim became one of the defining images of 1990s Chanel. Linda Evangelista wore it for a Vogue shoot by Steven Meisel. A version in a different colour is held in the V&A Museum's permanent collection; another was worn by Rihanna on Good Morning America in 2014; a yellow version appeared on Bunny MacDougal in Sex and the City.

Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel

Karl Lagerfeld was appointed creative director of Chanel in 1983 and spent thirty-six years reinterpreting the Chanel codes: the tweed suit, the quilted handbag, the little black dress, the CC monogram, across collections that also became known for their extraordinary runway spectacle. What he found, in his own words, was a “sleeping beauty” - a house with a clear heritage but no contemporary relevance. He rebuilt it into one of the most recognised luxury houses in the world.
