Curator's Note

An Alexander McQueen black jersey dress from the commercial collection, circa 2009. The design relates closely to the runway pieces with nude illusion panels and heavy crystal embellishment seen on the Spring Summer 2009 runway. McQueen built the collection around Darwin, natural selection, and the impact of industrialisation on the natural world, staged with a rotating projection of the Earth and taxidermy of endangered species. The collection moved in two phases, opening with pastel florals and lace referencing an unspoiled natural world, before shifting into a darker register of black, crystal-encrusted dresses and bodysuits, standing in for humanity's industrial impact.

Alexander McQueen

Alexander McQueen was founded in London in 1992 by Lee Alexander McQueen, who brought Savile Row tailoring together with a sustained engagement with history, mortality, the natural world and the relationship between beauty and violence. His runway shows, among them Dante, Deliverance and Plato's Atlantis, are among the most referenced in the history of fashion. The Savage Beauty exhibition, held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2011, broke attendance records and confirmed his place in the canon of 20th-century design.
