Curator's Note

An Alexander McQueen black jersey dress from the commercial collection, circa 2009. The design relates closely to the runway pieces with nude illusion panels and heavy crystal embellishment seen on the Spring Summer 2009 runway.

  • Nude illusion side panels
  • Large irregular glass stones applied around the side panels

Alexander McQueen

Alexander McQueen was founded in London in 1992 by Lee Alexander McQueen, who brought Savile Row tailoring together with a sustained engagement with history, mortality, the natural world and the relationship between beauty and violence. His runway shows, among them Dante, Deliverance and Plato's Atlantis, are among the most referenced in the history of fashion. The Savage Beauty exhibition, held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2011, broke attendance records and confirmed his place in the canon of 20th-century design.
