Alexander McQueen Black Cutout Shoulder Tailcoat by Sarah Burton (SS 2011)

Curator's Note

This tailcoat jacket was a press sample from Sarah Burton's Spring/Summer 2011 collection for Alexander McQueen, her first runway collection as creative director. The jacket is cropped at the front with a fitted body and curved tail panels at the back. The padded shoulders are cut at the seam for an open shoulder line, and the satin lapels are finished with fine topstitched channels. The runway version of this look, including the one worn by Anna Dello Russo at the 2011 Met Gala, had the lapel finished in white satin. This piece is a black colourway of the same design, with lapel, cuffs and lining executed in black satin rather than white.

Description

• Tailcoat with curved back hem

• Padded, structured shoulders, cutout at the shoulder seam

• Notched shawl lapel in black satin with topstitched channel

• Wide turn-back cuffs in black satin

• Single button closure at centre front
  

• Flap pockets at the back waist

• Same design as worn on the SS 2011 runway and by Anna Dello Russo at the 2011 Met Gala, in black rather than the black-and-white runway version

• This jacket was a press sample
