Curator's Note

This dress is a masterclass in material and construction from Lee Alexander McQueen. The fabric is fine silk devoré velvet, achieved through a process of chemically dissolving the velvet pile in a burnout technique to leave a sheer silk chiffon base, shifting between opacity and near-transparency as the wearer moves. Cut on the bias, the corset is built into the body of the dress, invisible from the front but exposed at the back. A chain at the halterneck runs down the back and attaches to the fabric of the skirt.

Alexander McQueen

Alexander McQueen was founded in London in 1992 by Lee Alexander McQueen, who brought Savile Row tailoring together with a sustained engagement with history, mortality, the natural world and the relationship between beauty and violence. His runway shows, among them Dante, Deliverance and Plato's Atlantis, are among the most referenced in the history of fashion. The Savage Beauty exhibition, held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2011, broke attendance records and confirmed his place in the canon of 20th-century design.
