Alaïa
Azzedine Alaïa was born in Tunis in 1935 and trained as a sculptor before moving to Paris, where he opened his own atelier in the late 1970s. He worked by draping and sculpting directly on the model, cutting all his own patterns by hand, and his mastery of stretch fabrics and knitwear produced a closeness of fit that remains the defining quality of his work. He refused to follow the conventional fashion calendar, presenting collections when he judged them ready. Naomi Campbell, who he met on her first day as a model in Paris, was his muse and closest collaborator. He died in Paris in November 2017.
