Curator's Note

A Gucci dress designed by Tom Ford from the early 2000s. The dress has a high neckline, open back and close-fitting skirt with blind-tucked ruched panels to the front and back. Although not a runway piece, the construction relates to the Autumn/Winter 2004 collection, where Ford used pleating, gathered panels and radiating seam work to shape the body.

Tom Ford for Gucci

Tom Ford was appointed creative director of Gucci in 1994 and rebuilt the house from the ground up, producing the defining Gucci by Tom Ford aesthetic of the 1990s and early 2000s. His signature slim tailoring, velvet suiting, satin shirts, cut-out dresses and 1970s sensibility is still referenced by designers today. Pieces from his decade at the house remain some of the most collected in the history of Italian fashion.
