Curator's Note

This cocktail dress was designed by Christian Lacroix for Jean Patou Haute Couture, Autumn/Winter 1985. Lacroix joined Patou in 1981 and revived the couture house. His work there earned the Dé d'Or de la Couture in 1986, and in 1987 he left to found his own house. Green silk chiffon is ruched and crossed over a one-sleeved bodice that continues into a hood. The drapery gathers at the hip beneath a rectangular buckle set with coloured rhinestones, from which falls a chiffon panel.

Christian Lacroix

Christian Lacroix was born in Arles, Provence in 1951 and opened his own couture house in Paris in 1987, the first new house to open since Yves Saint Laurent in 1961. His work referenced the clothes of 18th-century court, matador jackets, traditional Provençal prints, ecclesiastical embroidery in bright, vivid colours, reviving the pouf skirt and reintroducing the crinoline. He was named most influential foreign designer by the Council of Fashion Designers of America in 1987. The house closed in 2009 and was acquired by Spain's Sociedad Textil Lonia in 2025.
