Curator's Note

From Comme des Garçons AW 1990, designed by Rei Kawakubo. The seafoam nylon skirt with adjustable drawstring hem and sculptural fan-pleated stole - wearable as a cropped bolero or extended sleeves - embodies Kawakubo's exploration of adjustable volume and deconstruction at the turn of the decade.

Description

  • Two-piece ensemble in seafoam-green nylon comprising a skirt and sculptural pleated stole
  • Skirt with elasticated waistband, layered sheer panels and asymmetric handkerchief hem with integrated drawstrings to adjust length and drape
  • Pleated stole with fan-shaped nylon pleats arranged in floral-like clusters, worn as a cropped bolero or extended as long glove-like sleeves
  • From the Comme des Garçons AW 1990 runway, designed by Rei Kawakubo

Comme des Garçons

Comme des Garçons was founded in Tokyo in 1969 by Rei Kawakubo, who came to fashion with no formal design training. When she presented her first Paris collection in 1981, critics dismissed it as "Hiroshima chic" - dark, asymmetric, deliberately unfinished and entirely at odds with the glamour that dominated Paris fashion at the time. Her work treats the garment as a conceptual object, challenging conventional ideas of the body, beauty and gender. The 2017 exhibition Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between at the Metropolitan Museum of Art was only the second time a living designer had been given a solo exhibition there. Kawakubo founded Dover Street Market in London in 2004 with her husband Adrian Joffe.
