Jacques Esterel founded his Paris couture house in 1953, having come to fashion not through formal training but from a background as an engineer who held 72 patents on machine tools. He described himself as a "Parisian craftsman of dresses and songs." His name reached an international audience in 1959 when he designed Brigitte Bardot's wedding dress. Theatrical by instinct, his work combined a youthful spirit with a disregard for conventional boundaries. He wrote plays and songs, designed his own store fixtures, and in the early 1970s produced a unisex collection. His house also fostered early talent, including a young Jean Paul Gaultier.
