Curator's Note

This two-piece ensemble in red wool twill with a floral print comprises a long coat and matching sleeveless dress, designed by Michael Goma for Jean Patou in the 1970s. The coat is cut with a flared, mid-calf silhouette and framed by a contrasting vertical floral panel running along the front opening, echoed at the pointed collar and the cuffs. The sleeveless dress features a straight neckline with a wide floral border panel, with the print placement coordinated across both pieces.

Jean Patou

Jean Patou opened his Paris couture house in 1914 and relaunched in 1919, quickly establishing himself as one of the leading figures of 1920s fashion alongside Chanel and Lanvin. He was among the first couturiers to design clothing specifically for sport and active life, making tennis champion Suzanne Lenglen his muse. His cubist sweaters of 1924, inspired by Braque and Picasso, and his monogrammed jersey sportswear built his reputation as both a designer and a marketing innovator. He launched Joy in 1929, which became the world's second bestselling fragrance after Chanel No. 5. The house closed its couture ateliers in 1987 and was relaunched by LVMH in 2018 under Guillaume Henry.
