Givenchy

Givenchy was founded in Paris in 1952 by Hubert de Givenchy. Still only 24, he had already worked for Jacques Fath, Robert Piguet, Lucien Lelong and Elsa Schiaparelli. His debut collection was notable for its use of inexpensive cotton shirting and included the ruffled Bettina blouse, named after model Bettina Graziani. In 1953, Givenchy met Cristóbal Balenciaga, who became a close friend and an important influence on his work. Four years later, both designers presented versions of the loose, unfitted sack dress. That same year, Givenchy began his long association with Audrey Hepburn. He created wardrobes for films including Sabrina, Funny Face and Breakfast at Tiffany’s, and in 1957 the house launched L’Interdit, a fragrance originally created for her. LVMH acquired Givenchy in 1988, with Hubert de Givenchy remaining at the house until his retirement in 1995. Since then, designers including John Galliano, Alexander McQueen, Riccardo Tisci, Clare Waight Keller and Sarah Burton have each brought their own interpretation to the house.
