Christian Dior Fuchsia Jacquard Lace Camisole by John Galliano (AW 1998)

Curator's Note

This camisole was designed by John Galliano for Christian Dior's Autumn/Winter 1998 ready-to-wear collection, in which several similar lace-trimmed slip looks appeared on the runway and in the season's advertising campaign. The body is cut in fuchsia floral jacquard with a yellow lace trim at the bust and along the back. The design was also made in reverse colours, with a yellow jacquard body and fuchsia lace. Hailey Bieber wore a dress version of the design, which was also presented on the runway that season.

John Galliano for Christian Dior

John Galliano was appointed creative director of Christian Dior in 1996, bringing fifteen years of theatrical, historically driven collections to the house. His references ranged across Marchesa Casati, Egyptian antiquity, the Belle Époque, Japanese geisha culture and the Parisian demi-monde, each season staged as a full narrative. Under his direction Dior tripled its turnover and produced some of the most collected ready-to-wear and haute couture of the era, including the iconic Saddle Bag.
