Curator's Note

This runway multicolour tweed jacket was designed by Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel's Autumn-Winter 2001-2002 collection. The wool-blend tweed is woven with pink, orange, green, yellow, brown and bordeaux yarns, framed by a textured crochet-style trim at the collarless neckline, front opening, pockets, cuffs and hem. It fastens with a concealed centre-front wooden Chanel Paris button and is lined in tonal pink silk with a CC jacquard motif.

Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel

Karl Lagerfeld was appointed creative director of Chanel in 1983 and spent thirty-six years reinterpreting the Chanel codes: the tweed suit, the quilted handbag, the little black dress, the CC monogram, across collections that also became known for their extraordinary runway spectacle. What he found, in his own words, was a “sleeping beauty” - a house with a clear heritage but no contemporary relevance. He rebuilt it into one of the most recognised luxury houses in the world.
