Curator's Note

Alexander McQueen's Autumn/Winter 2004 collection, Pantheon ad Lucem, was presented at La Grande Halle de la Villette in Paris on 5 March 2004. The collection took inspiration from classical Greek drapery and science fiction films, including Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey. Models emerged from a spacecraft-like entrance onto an illuminated circular runway, dressed in pale fabrics with short, tightly curled hairstyles reminiscent of ancient Greek sculpture. McQueen wanted to place greater emphasis on the clothes rather than the elaborate staging of his previous shows. The collection featured draped jersey dresses, chiffon gowns and fitted coats in a palette of pale and neutral colours. Sarah Mower, reviewing the show for Vogue, noted McQueen's decision to concentrate on the cut and shape of his designs.

This gown appeared as Look 39 on the runway. It has a strapless corseted bodice and layers of printed chiffon in muted pink, purple and grey. The fabric gathers at the bust and extends into a long draped panel, with a print resembling animal markings and reptile skin.

Alexander McQueen

Alexander McQueen was founded in London in 1992 by Lee Alexander McQueen, who brought Savile Row tailoring together with a sustained engagement with history, mortality, the natural world and the relationship between beauty and violence. His runway shows, among them Dante, Deliverance and Plato's Atlantis, are among the most referenced in the history of fashion. The Savage Beauty exhibition, held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2011, broke attendance records and confirmed his place in the canon of 20th-century design.
